Monday night ... 9-15-08 Mt. Vernon, Illinois

Good evening to all!

Tonight is the last night on the road and we have bunked down here at Comfort Suites in Mt. Vernon. We left North Platte, NE this morning @ 8:30 am and by 12:30 or so we had rolled right through Iowa and landed in Missouri by 1:30pm. So I guess most of our day has been spent in MO. We have traveled a little over 700 mi. today.... so this means...600 0r so Tues. We may have saddle sores for sure! It is hard to believe that we have been ridin the ol dusty trails for 16 days now.

We started with the old west town of Fort Smith,AR where Judge Isaac Parker took care of all the outlaws...

Oklahoma... we breezed through the CowboyHall of Fame....

Texas... we stopped in at the Cadillac Ranch and saw 10 Caddy's with their noses to the ground....

New Mexico... we got our "Kicks on Rt 66" all the way to Sante Fe and then rolled right through the very busy city of Albuquerque...

Arizona... a drive through the scenic Oak Creek Canyon took us to the beautiful little town of Sedona where we took the Pink Jeep Tour and sat on a Vortex....back up through the canyon to Flagstaff and then. .... Grand Canyon National Park... where we saw morning's first light...

Utah's... Monument Valley with it's magnificent mesas and buttes surrounded by empty, sandy desert and known for all the cowboy movies and John Wayne... we also got a quick peek at Lake Powell before heading on to ....

Four Corners.... where we sat in 4 states at one time... UT...CO
AZ...NM

Utah also gave us Canyonlands National Park and Newspaper Rock ......Petroglyphs left by the Anasazi,Navajo and Anglo cultures and I just about forgot...Hole in the Rock! http://www.theholeintherock.com/ click here...

And finally... Wyoming... where in the magnificent Tetons... Eagles soar.... the Snake River flows ,bison and elk roam and moose and bear are sometimes hard to find... and then... there is Yellowstone... a magical place with many places still left for us to explore...

And... Montana... Glacier National Park.... beautiful alpine mountains, lakes, big horn sheep, mtn. goats and still more trails than anyone could ever cover... and Ann... a new friend made along the way...

It has been a great and wonderful journey... new trails made and old ones revisited... We have been blessed to have seen all these places and things and know that God has created them all.

Thanks for all your prayers during our travels and putting up with all of my ramblings...

See ya on down the trail!

Hello from Wyoming...one more time!

Saturday 9-13-08 Sheridan, WY.

Hello from Wyoming... one more time!
We ended our trail tonight in Sheridan, WY. around 7:00 pm... have had our grub and settled in our nice cozy bunk for the night
here at the Hampton Inn.

Since Wednesday we have covered some new trails and some old ones. On Thursday morning (9-11-08) we left West Yellowstone, MT. and headed to Glacier National Park. I checked the weather for both places (Yellowstone & Glacier) and YNP was calling for rain and snow mix... GNP... clear and sunny and also had e-mailed Ann Summers and she also had checked for us also... so it was a definite go! The drive up was beautiful...(6 hrs. w/several stops) when we left the temp was 26 and there was a heavy frost all over the vehicle and windshield as it was still dark and the sun was just beginning to rise. As we continued to the route we would take...it looked like we were going into a big lake... it turned out to be a sea of fog lying in the valley before us. We continued thought the Madison Canyon along side the Madison River which flows thought the west side of Yellowstone... before long we spotted a bear up in the edge of the forest... we turned and went back only to find, it too, had turned and was hi-tailin' it back up the mountain. The river was beautiful... lots of white water spouting up and as the sun begin to rise the sky lite up with colors of pinks and purples... gorgeous! We continued on towards Missoula and would then stop for a picnic in the bright sunshine but brisk air.... the grass around us was a bright green and the dew was still on it.... and the air smelled so clean and fresh. as we got closer to Polson, MT. on the Flathead Lake I called Ann (From the Front Porch) and we stopped then in Big Fork and had a short visit. From here we were only about 30 min. from the park. We checked on rooms in the park and of course they were all full, but we were able to find one just as you go in. Now mind you it was not a luxury hotel-motel... you might say... this could be our camping night. Our room was small and clean, a fan for air conditioning and a little heater in the wall. We had a clock radio that would pick up one station and a shower that you could barely get your arms up without bumping your elbows.

Well,we wouldn't be there long. We took off to the Going to the Sun Road, and this would be our 3rd time here so we were excited that we would actually get to see the mountains for the first time. It was a gorgeous day, blue sky and no clouds! It was breathtaking... really...because the mountains are straight up and the road beside of you is straight down and the road is not very wide and in some places one lane as they are working on it. Today we saw big horn sheep and mountain goats. We went all the way across and down to the Rising Sun Road, which leads out to the east side of the park and instead of turning and going back we took rt 89 back to the west side... almost a 2 hr. drive on a road that was Open Range with a cow standing in what seemed to be every curve and there were a lot of them (curves&cows) We finally got back around 10:00 and hit the bed only to get settled down when I thought I heard a bear.... false alarm... someone in the room next to us was really sawing some logs! If it was that loud in our room... can you imagine what it was like for that persons partner???

Friday morning...9-12-08... Last day... before the journey home begins...

We awake to another beautiful day! Not quite as cold as the day before, blue sky dotted with big puffy clouds. So, after breakfast at the restaurant beside of us we went back up the Going to the Sun Road. We had about a 25 minute wait in one area but it didn't seem that long as everyone gets out and likes to talk. We didn't see any wild life on the way up this time but when we got to Logan's Pass and hiked about 3 1/2 miles round trip. We saw more mountain goats up close & personal! On the way back down, more big horn sheep! Now they tell me it is rare that you see the sheep, soo we were very lucky.

The hike back into the mountains was so gorgeous. This is really the only way to see them. They are big, alpine like and as we continued the trail we came upon another view that would take your breath away! Hidden Lake, beautiful deep turquoise water surrounded by big tall
pines and big tall mountains and some capped with snow in the background. We continued to descend to the lake but decided we had better start back up as the time was getting late and we were to start the journey home this evening ( 2,268 mi. away).

As we traveled down the east side again we still saw many beautiful sights, waterfalls and lakes and then of course we ended up on the "Open Range" road again. Only this time in the daylight...thank goodness! We traveled along through the Blackfeet Indian Reservation!Interesting, I'm always glad to be out of their territory, lots of broken beer and liquor bottles along the road side and bullet holes in the road signs. We made it to Great Falls around 7:00pm or so and secured a room at the Hampton Inn, nice cozy bunk and no snoring next door.

Saturday morning 9-13-08 The journey home... begins

Late getting up this morning ... looked out the window to find rain and clouds and cool temps. We finally checked out around 10:30am and then went to fuel up and checked the route that "Lola" would be taking us (Garmin) only to find we would be going through ND and down through Chicago.... the weather channel showed lots of rain that way... so, we changed her mind and headed down into Wyoming. Another pretty drive today as the storm clouds turned into big blue sky again with those white puffy clouds.... part of this trail, we had been on before. We were able to stop at the Little Big Horn Natl. Monument on this trail and here we also thought we might take in a rodeo... turned out to be an all "Crow Pro-Rodeo."... they didn't seem to happy to see us there, so we didn't go and headed on in to Sheridan.... which finally brings us up to date. Aren't you glad???

Well... time for some shut eye...
Happy Trails to All!

Howdy from West Yellowstone, Montana !

Wednesday...9-10-08

Today was our last day in Jackson and the Tetons. We checked into a brand new cabin on Mon. and spent 2 days roamin' Wyoming and Grand Teton Park and today for the most part as it was about 2:00 pm when we finally headed up to Yellowstone. On Mon. morning as we drove in from Star Valley up Rt 89 we stopped along the Snake River and did a couple of short trails. It was a beautiful and crisp morning... perfect in every way.... cool temps and that big blue sky we love to see out here... and of course that pretty blue and sometimes almost turquoise water of the Snake River... and let's not forget the smell of those big pine trees ! Soo... fresh and clean... Our 1st trail... The Kahuna... short and sweet... a nice view from a higher level... 2nd trail... the Lunch Counter... took us down a steep trail right down to the river...an area of rock that resembled a counter and then in front of it there were round holes that could have been bowls... all carved ... worn out by the water. Very interesting to see and feel the layers of rock... smooth and slick ... but in places looked like leather. The water was fast and loud... there was a couple of anglers trying to catch the Big One. We finally made it into town just in time for lunch at Billy's Burgers... known for their 1/2 lb burgers... and no... I couldn't eat the whole thing... but you can bet someone finished for me. Then of course we had to do the web-cam thing at the arch of elk antlers in the town square before we set out on our Moose Hunt. Well we didn't see any moose this day but we did see a gorgeous sunset. Tues. we set out on another hunt and finally hit the jackpot with a Mama and baby.

... and of course we always go out to Mormon Row to see those beautiful barns and take a few pics .Later that afternoon after a picnic by the lake we did a boat cruise around Jackson Lake ( the lake is 17 mi. long & 8 mi. wide) it took about 1 1/2 hrs. beautiful and very informative... the 1st mate was from NC. By this time it was getting late and on the way back to our cabin we took a side trip out on the Gros Ventre Range and saw the sun go down from there.... which brings us up to today. This morning we were in search of a ghost ranch we had looked for yesterday... so we stopped @ the visitors center and got directions. This trail was rough and rugged and warned us 4 wheel drive recommended... we found the ranch... it had been a dude ranch and was abandoned... we also got caught in a storm while there and had to seek shelter in what was once the tack building... you couldn't drive down ... so we were a pretty good little walk from the car. When the storm had passed... the sun shone through and the clouds lifted .... the Grand Tetons appeared in all their glory!

We continued our 20 some mi. trail that took us along the Snake River... we met 2 cars the whole trip one of which we stopped and talked with ... they were from England.... they said it was "Just Lovely"... after we finally got to the park road and on our way again... one more moose and then lunch at the lake and onward to Yellowstone! We had rain going in but then the higher we got we finally saw sun.... stopped at the Middle Geyser Basin to view The Grand Prismatic ... there was so much steam coming from it we could barely see the pretty blue color... the temp here was about 42 with quite a bit of wind. So here we are for the night and no real plan for Thurs. Guess we'll decide when we get up!
Roamin' old trails and still blazin' new ones!

GRAND PRISMATIC SPRING Temperature 147-188°F Dimensions 250x380 feet. Grand Prismatic is the largest hot spring in Yellowstone, and is considered to be the third largest in the world—New Zealand has the two largest springs. Grand Prismatic sits upon a wide, spreading mound where water flows evenly on all sides forming a series of small, stair-step terraces. The Hayden Expedition in 1871 named this spring because of its beautiful coloration, and artist Thomas Moran made water-color sketches depicting its rainbow-like colors. The sketches seemed exaggerations and geologist A.C. Peale returned in 1878 to verify the colors. The colors begin with a deep blue center followed by pale blue. Green algae forms beyond the shallow edge. Outside the scalloped rim a band of yellow fades into orange. Red then marks the outer border. Steam often shrouds the spring which reflects the brilliant colors. Grand Prismatic discharges an estimated 560 gallons per minute.

Howdy from Wyoming!

Well we finally made it to Wyoming and have settled in for the night in Thayne. We are staying in the Wolf Den Cabins... very nice, quaint and cozy. I can't believe we actually have Internet! This is a very small town on Hwy 89 about 31 mi. south of Jackson Hole. Today has been a day of travel only ... no major things to see driving out of UT. Actually most of what we saw today looked like it could have been on the moon until we got to Provo, UT and then we started to see mountains and trees... evergreens and aspens.... we even saw a little bit of color in the higher elevations.... as we began to climb higher there were two beautiful lakes one of which we stopped and watched some wind surfers. The best thing about today.... the temperature changed! We are finally in some cooler weather and have had the heat on tonight.... quite a contrast from last night. Tomorrow (Mon.) we plan to go into Jackson and to the Tetons.... gonna go moose, elk and bear huntin.... could be a long day!
Sooo... that's about it for tonight...
See ya on down the trail!
